 Smithsonian Magazine’s 12th Annual Museum Day Live!

ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA, SEPTEMBER 14, 2018— Alexandria Museum of Art, and T.R.E.E.House Children’s Museum, will open their doors free of charge on Saturday September 22, 2018 as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 14th annual Museum Day, a national celebration of boundless curiosity in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based museums.

Museum Day represents a nationwide commitment to access, equity and inclusion. Over 250,000 people downloaded tickets for last year’s event, and Museum Day 2018 is expected to attract more museum-goers than ever before.

The theme of this year’s Museum Day is Women Making History, honoring women in society who are trailblazers in the arts, sciences, innovation and culture, and emboldening others to be pioneers as well.

Alexandria Museum of Art currently has two exhibitions on view that can be seen for free on Museum Day Live. :

Connected Visions: Louisiana’s Artistic Lineage: An exhibition 40 years in the making! Opened in October 2017, this exhibition spotlights the development of Louisiana art in the state through connections between artists and educators, and is the first permanent exhibition of works from the AMoA Collection. Beginning with Ellsworth and William Woodward, this web of connectivity between artists in the state reaches to the present day.

31st September Competition: This exhibition was selected by 2018 Juror William U. Eiland, of Sprout, Georgia, director of the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia, and is composed of Local, National, and International submissions highlighting contemporary art practices in all media. Guests will be able to take a self-guided tour of #WomenMakingHistory in our permanent collection on their mobile devices as they visit AMoA’s  galleries.

In addition to the exhibitions, during Museum Day we will have a Qi Gong class in the main gallery at 10:30am, and “Sugar Blues”, a Healthy Living@AMoA Learning Session at 2pm, led by Certified Health Coach, Maria Olagues, and sponsored by Rapides Regional Medical Center. 


Museum Day tickets will be available for download at Smithsonian.com/MuseumDay beginning August 15. Visitors who present a Museum Day ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues on September 22, 2018. One ticket is permitted per email address. A list of participating museums, which will be continually updated as more museums continue to register, can be found at Smithsonian.com/MuseumDay/Search.
